Gilling

Gilling East is in North Yorkshire and  lies on the main road (B1363) between York and Helmsley and two miles south of Oswaldkirk at grid reference SE6075.

The village, with a population of fewer than 200, lies just south of The North Yorks Moors National Park and close to Ampleforth Abbey and School.

Gilling Castle (historically a home of the Fairfax family) is in the village - and indeed next door to the railway. It is now the home of the preparatory section of Ampleforth College. Part of the grounds has been converted to a 9-hole golf course. The grounds of the castle are regularly open to visitors during the summer months.

Gilling is notably the home of the RSME. The RSME railway and club house are at The Old School on Pottergate which is the narrow road running west from the main road alongside the Fairfax Arms. The railway is on the right 200 yards beyond the pub and to the right.

The railway occupies the old school grounds and the field beyond – which is also available for member and visitor parking when the railway is operating. The club headquarters are located in part of the old school building.  The main line of the railway consists of two parallel tracks forming a complete circuit of the available land with wide sweeps and gradients). There are also goods yards, carriage sidings, loco shed, turntable and loco preparation area. The railway is fully signalled (semaphore) from two fully interlocked signal boxes.
